Instituted 1687. An important and scarce order in Gold consisting of all hand etched detailing with the highest degree of precision, obverse exhibiting an enameled St.Andrew at centre with hand painted finishings, enameled Latin motto of the order in surround, Nemo me impune lacessit, (""No one provokes me with impunity""), reverse of equal quality with enamels and hand painted details, a hand relief of thistle at 12 o'clock, measuring 24.3 mm (w) x 34.2 mm (h), weighing 10.5 grams, with minor enamel loss to obverse white enamel cross at 11 o'clock arm, accompanied by a section of the broad riband (sash) with Gold clip, extremely fine.
Footnote: Although unmarked, the enamel work and manufacturing characteristics are similar to known examples by Hunt & Roskell, late Storr Mortimer & Hunt, of 156 New Bond Street, London who were commissioned for this particular order during the mid 19th Century.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
