A British War Medal to Captain Baines

A British War Medal to Captain Baines - (CAPT. E.A. BAINES.). Naming is officially impressed. Semi-dark patina, extremely fine. Accompanied by copies of the War Diary (mentioning that he was at Arras on June 13, 1917), Index Card (acknowledging his eligibility for the BWM and VM) and two pages from the London Gazette. Footnote: Edward Aveling Baines was born in Ely, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk in 1882. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd East Anglian (Howitzer) Brigade Ammunition Column, Royal Field Artillery, Territorial Force on June 9, 1915. He was appointed a Temporary Lieutenant (November 4, 1915), then promoted to Lieutenant (June 1, 1916). Baines departed England and was posted to the 63rd Brigade, RFA on January 13, 1917 and fought at Arras, serving with A Battery of the Brigade. In October 1917, he was reposted to the 7th Division and was appointed to Acting Captain on April 18, 1918 (London Gazette 6208, May 28, 1918), later relinquishing the rank of Acting Captain on December 8th (London Gazette 3604, March 17, 1919). Baines died at Ipswich and East Suffolk Hospital, Ipswich, Suffolk on July 29, 1955, at the age of 73.
