Instituted 1816. A silver medal, the obverse presents a fortified mountain top with a cannon and in the foreground, the reverse presents a Persian inscription “This medal was conferred by the Nawab Governor-General Baghatur, in testimony of the energy, good service, skill and intrepidity which was displayed during the campaign in the hills, in the Hijri years 1229 and 1230”, measures 50.6mm (w) x 65.6mm (h – inclusive of flattened loop suspension), weighs 54.6 grams, minor wear.
Footnote: This medal was awarded at the end of the Anglo-Gorkha War in March 1816 at Fort William by the Honourable East India Company. It was presented to Indian officers and to rank and file soldiers whose gallantry recommended them for distinction. The Treaty of Sagauli, signed by the representatives of the HEIC and the Kingdom of Gorkha just two weeks before this medal was authorized, defines the border of modern Nepal today. A total of 300 were awarded.
