Footnote: Pte George Holmes, Royal Marines Light Infantry, served aboard the HMS Himalaya. The South Africa Medal 1877-1879 was awarded to the HMS Himalaya for it’s service between March 9-15 1978, when the ship arrived at East London with the 2/24th foot who were ordered onto trains that took them to King Williams Town. A total of 229 men were awarded the medal on this ship, 27 of which were royal marines. Pte. Holmes served with the 2nd Battalion Highland Light Infantry during the Anglo-Egyptian War, with the service number 601. It is believed Holmes became a boatswain in the early 1900s.
