Instituted June 1, 1847. In silver, full size, rim official impressed “GEORGE SCOTT.”, worn on replacement ribbon with SYRIA clasp, light wear, small knocks, lovely patina, in extremely fine condition.
Footnote: There are two George Scott names on the medal roll for the Naval General Service Medal with Syria clasp. One served aboard the Revenge, the other on the Phoenix.
The Naval General Service Medal was established by General Order on June 1, 1847. The was originally intended to reward actions of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, from 1793-1815, but it was later extended to include all naval actions until 1840. The Medal was retroactively awarded to all claimants of the Royal Navy who served in campaigns during this period. It was also awarded to some members of the British Army who served in the Fleet as marines or engineers. Claims were directed to the Secretary of Admiralty at Whitehall. Approximately 6,978 Syria clasps were awarded.
