Instituted in 1899. 2 Clasps - FENIAN RAID 1866 (Sgt. J. Johnston, 1st. P. W. R.). Naming is officially impressed. In silver, engraver marked "T.B." on the obverse, measuring 36.2 mm in diameter. Very dark patina, light contact, original ribbon with large safety pin attachment, near extremely fine.
Footnote: The Canada General Service Medal was instituted in January 1899 and was awarded to members of Imperial forces and Canadian Militia who fought against Fenian raiders who came north during the aftermath of the American Civil War. Sergeant James Johnston is shown on the roll of the 142 man 1st (Prince of Wales Regiment Volunteer Rifles) Battalion, listed on page 59 of the "Canada General Service Medal Roll, 1866-70" by John Thyen, entitled to the 1866 clasp.
