Description: Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George, Companion (18K Gold with blue and white enamels, handpainted centrepieces, marked "18 Ct" (Gold) on the edge, 21.5 mm x 26 mm); Order of the British Empire, Commander (silver with red and blue enamels, 22 mm x 29 mm); Distinguished Service Order, Companion (three-piece construction, silver gilt with red, white and green enamels, 19.3 mm); Queen's Sudan Medal (silver, 17.5 mm); British War Medal (silver, 17.5 mm); Victory Medal with MID Oak Leaf (bronze, 17.5 mm); Egypt: Order of the Nile, 2nd Class (multi-piece construction, silver with blue and white enamels, 21.7 mm x 33.5 mm, large rosette on the ribbon); Turkey: Order of Medjidie (Mecidiye), 4th Class (three-piece construction, silver with Gold and red enamels, 20.2 mm x 28 mm, large rosette on the ribbon); Turkey: Order of Osmania (Osmanli), 3rd Class (four-piece construction, silver with red and green enamels, 21 mm x 31.5 mm, large rosette on the ribbon); and Khedive's Sudan Medal, 1 Clasp - SUDAN 1897 (silver, 17.5 mm). Mounted to a suspension with swing bar pinback, original ribbons, chipping and crazing evident in the enamels on the Order of the Nile, all other enamels are intact, near extremely fine. In a hardshelled presentation case, maker marked "SPINK & SON Ltd" on the inside lid, light wear evident on the exterior corners and edges, case also near extremely fine. Accompanied by his Cigarette Case (silver, engraved "G. Clifford. M. Hall" on the front cover, engraved with an inscription in Turkish on the back cover, marked with the British lion, a leopard's head (made in London), date marked "d" (1899) and maker marked "S. M & Co" (Sampson, Mordan & Company) on both inside covers, coded "Rd 254608" on the inside back cover, 70 mm x 83 mm x 16.5 mm, contact marks and tarnishing evident on the exterior). Footnote: George Clifford Miller Hall was born on January 26, 1872 in Southsea, Hampshire, England, the son of Captain W.H. Hall, Royal Navy. He entered the Royal Engineers on February 12, 1892 and was later commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. Hall was promoted to Lieutenant effective February 12, 1895, the announcement appearing in the London Gazette 26604 of Tuesday, March 5, 1895, page 1318. Hall served in the rank of Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers with the Nile Expedition in 1897-1898 and was awarded the Turkish Order of Medjidie (Mecidiye), 4th Class, the notice coming from Whitehall on October 3, 1898 and the announcement appearing in the London Gazette 27012 of Friday, October 7, 1898, page 5863. He was also Mentioned in Despatches for distinguished service in the Sudan, the announcement appearing in the London Gazette 27031 of Friday, December 9, 1898, page 7970. Lieutenant Hall, Royal Engineers was employed with the Egyptian Army and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order, the notice coming from the War Office on December 16, 1898, the announcement appearing in the London Gazette 27033 of Friday, December 16, 1898, page 8125: "George Clifford Miller Hall, Lieutenant, Royal Engineers. In recognition of services during the recent operations in the Sudan". For his service in the Sudan, Hall was awarded the Queen's Sudan Medal and the Khedive's Sudan Medal with Sudan 1897 Clasp. He was also later named a recipient of the Order of the Nile, 2nd Class. His first marriage was to Genevieve Stickney in 1901, who was the daughter of J.B. Stickney of St. Augustine, Florida, however, she died in 1902. Lieutenant Hall was promoted to Captain, effective December 19, 1902, the announcement appearing in the London Gazette 27523 of Tuesday, February 10, 1903, page 845. In the rank of Captain with the Royal Engineers, serving as Goods Manager of the Egyptian State Railways, he was awarded the Turkish Order of Osmania (Osmanli), 3rd Class, the notice coming from Whitehall on June 21, 1904 and the announcement appearing in the London Gazette 27689 of Friday, June 24, 1904, page 4034. Hall remarried in 1906, taking Annie E.M. Kelly was his wife, the daughter of Fitzroy Kelly, MA of Lincoln's Inn, the couple having two sons and two daughters. He was placed on the Reserve List of the Corps of Royal Engineers and resigned his commission, effective April 15, 1914, the announcement appearing in the London Gazette 28821 on Tuesday, April 14, 1914, page 3169. Captain Hall, DSO, was on the Reserve of Officers when he was recalled for First World War service, named Temporary Lieutenant-Colonel and served as Assistant Director of Railway Transportation, effective January 1, 1916, the announcement appearing in the Second Supplement to the London Gazette 29643 of Tuesday, June 27, 1916, on Wednesday, June 28, 1916, page 6414. He was also Mentioned in Despatches for distinguished service, as part of the Administration in Egypt, the announcement appearing in the Third Supplement to the London Gazette 29632 of Tuesday, June 20, 1916, on Wednesday, June 21, 1916, page 6182. Captain George Clifford Miller Hall, DSO, late of the Royal Engineers, Australian Imperial Force, received a New Years' Honour in 1917, appointed by King George V as a recipient of the Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG). For his First World War service, he was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal with MID Oak Leaf. He had also been previously named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire and had been formerly Traffic Manager of the Egyptian State Railways, as well as being Director of the Anglo-Egyptian Local Board of Barclays Bank (Dominion, Colonial and Overseas). He died on December 9, 1930 in Exeter, Devonshire, England, at the age of 58. (C:14)
