It begins with a Foreword by General George Giffard, G.C.B., D.S.O., followed by a Table of Contents, a List of 40 Illustrations, A List of 47 Maps and Sketches, a List of 11 Folded Maps, an Acknowledgements and an Introduction. The cover has experienced age soiling and wear, with a tear present where the spine butts the back cover, moisture damage evident on the inside covers and the pages adjacent to them, foxing and red ink on the edges of the pages.
