Hayward and Son of London (a company with an international reputation dealing exclusively in orders, decorations and medals, particularly in British campaign medals), reprinted by Kingprint Limited of Richmond, Surrey, England in 1972; reprinted from an original book entitled "War Medals of the British Army and How They Were Won" by Thomas Carter, published by Norie and Wilson of London in 1893; revised, enlarged, and continued to 1972 by W.H. Long, Editor of "The Oglander Memoirs" and "Memoirs of Lady Hamilton", ISBN 85368 072 8. It begins with a Preface and a List of Contents. The book itself describes various battles in detail and the medals that were awarded for the conflicts. The medals range from the Badge of Charles I that was issued in the 1650s, through to the British campaign medals issued up until the 1890s, specializing in the Victorian period. Also featured are the Victoria Cross, the Distinguished Conduct Medal, Long Service and Meritorious Service Medals, along with many others. The book was a popular one with collector's in its original 1893 version and became unattainable over time, necessitating the reprint. The book represents a precise and accurate account of the campaigns and actions it covers. Also included is some unique reference material: List of British recipients of the French Military Medal, and the Sardinian Medal for Valour awarded during the Crimean War, many of which carry citations. The book contains 704 pages of text along with artist line drawn medals and woodcuts, the colour plates from the original published book having been converted to black, printed in black ink, on an off-white paper stock, measuring 145 mm (w) x 223 mm (h) x 58 mm (d). Light foxing evident on the top of the pages, along with wear present on the dust jacket at the back, the contents of the book remaining unaffected. Near extremely fine.
Footnote: The 1972 author of the book, J.B. Hayward, served in the postwar Royal Air Force, including service in Malaya, later receiving the Queen's Commendation for Brave Conduct. His primary interest was in gallantry awards to flying personnel of the Royal Flying Corps, the Royal Air Force, the Royal Naval Air Service, and the Fleet Air Arm.
