WWI Group to 2nd Lieutenant A.G.Isbell - British War Medal (2. LIEUT. A.G. ISBELL.); Victory Medal (2. LIEUT. A.G. ISBELL.); War Medal 1939-1945; and Defence Medal. Naming is officially impressed on the WWI medals, the WWII medals are unnamed. Court mounted, light contact, near extremely fine. Accompanied by a copy of his Index Card (acknowledging his eligibility for the BWM and VM), copies of eight pages from the London Gazette and copies of two newspaper articles while Secretary of the St. Mary's Sailing Club on the Isles of Scilly, Cornwall. Footnote: Arthur Gordon Isbell was born in St. Austell, Cornwall, Ontario on October 22, 1897, the son of Archibald Isbell (estate agent) and Minnie Lacey Isbell of Fowey, Cornwall. He had one brother, Cyril John (born 1895) and one sister, Florence Minnie (born 1894). During WWI, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Garrison Artillery, Territorial Force on January 6, 1918 and promoted to Lieutenant with the RGA, TF on July 6, 1919 (London Gazette 11880, September 24, 1919). He served in both France and Belgium from May 10, 1918 to June 9, 1918. Post-War, he was a Lieutenant in the Devonshire Coast Brigade, Royal Garrison Artillery (July 9, 1919) and resigned his commission in the Devon Heavy Brigade, Royal Artillery, Territorial Army (March 7, 1925, London Gazette 1609, March 6, 1925), retaining the rank of Lieutenant and resided in Penzance, Cornwall. Between the wars, Isbell was Secretary of the St. Mary's Sailing Club on the Isles of Scilly, Cornwall. He was stationed with the Royal Engineers at Torpoint and District Searchlight Company at Callington and relinquished the rank of Lieutenant on enlistment in the ranks as a Sapper with the Royal Engineers (March 6, 1939; London Gazette, October 16, 1939 and April 27, 1939; London Gazette 5924, August 29, 1939), eventually attaining the rank of Lance Corporal (101460) in the Royal Engineers. Just before the official declaration on WWII, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant (August 24, 1939), attained an Emergency Commission in the Land Forces, Royal Artillery (September 16, 1939; London Gazette, October 12, 1939) serving throughout the war, was promoted to War Substantive Lieutenant, Royal Artillery, Territorial Army (March 2, 1941) and appointed Temporary Captain, Royal Artillery, Territorial Army (April 22, 1941). He died in 1977 at St. Austell, Cornwall, at the age of 79.
