Queen's South Africa Medal (176131. A.B. JACKMAN. H.M.S. PHILOMEL); 1914-15 Star (GNR. J. JACKMAN. R.N.); and British War and Victory Medals (GNR. J. JACKMAN. R.N.) Naming is officially impressed on all four. Board mounted, crisp detail, beautiful patinas, extremely fine. Also included is a duotang folder with his military biography and six ship photographs. Footnote: John Jackman was born on October 20, 1877 and as Able Seaman aboard H.M.S. Philomel (3rd Class Cruiser), during the Boer War in South Africa, from 1899-1900, served in the state of Natal, probably guarding and taking up supplies to forward troops. On March 14, 1906, he achieved the rank of Gunner (T) Torpedo. Between October 1906 and November 1912, he served on the H.M.S. Adventure (Scout Cruiser), Andromache (T.S. Cruiser 2nd Class) and Nubian (F 'Tribal' Class Destroyer) in home waters. He joined the H.M.S. Newcastle (Light Cruiser) in December 1912 and spent the first part of his war service in the Pacific, from 1914 to 1916. In September 1916, he was transferred to H.M.S. Paragon (K Class Destroyer), for patrol in the Straits of Dover. On the night of March 17, 1917, in the company of Laertes, Laforey and Llewellyn, a German destroyer force steamed in to the Straits, with a view to breaking through the barrage. The first ship encountered was the Paragon, which was torpedoed and overwhelmed by gunfire. As she began her challenge, she blew up and sank immediately, with only ten of her complement of seventy-seven rescued. Gunner John Jackman was Killed in Action.
