Greece. A Nursing Sisters Red Cross Medal Bar

As pictured on page 150 of the medal guide "Greek Medals" by George Stratoudakis, worn by nursing suster; a Greek Medal Bar that belonged to a civilian member of the Hellenic (Greek) Red Cross during World War Two and the Post-War Greek Civil War era. The medal bar belonged to the unnamed nun depicted in the picture. Originally, the medal bar consisted of six awards, as shown in the picture, but a seventh award was later added by skilled hands, demonstrated by the crisp workmanship on the medal bar. The medal bar consists of 1) A Medal of Outstanding Acts (Metallion Exerton Praxeon), (1940); in bronze; encircled by a laurel wreath and crossed swords that protrude from underneath the cross; marked “1940” on the reverse; on loop for suspension; original ribbon; measuring 47 mm x 34 mm. 2) Commemorative Medal for the War of 1940-1941 for Land Operations; in bronze; obverse depicts a left-facing bust of King George II in the centre, surrounded by a circular laurel wreath; the reverse lists the campaigns from 1940 to 1941, for which the medal was awarded (Epirus, Albania, Macedonia, Thrace, Crete); on loop for suspension; original ribbon; measuring 31 mm in diameter. 3) Hellenic Red Cross Service Medal (1940-1941); in bronze; obverse depicts a large red cross in finely detailed red enamel, encircled by laurel branches in green enamel; on horizontal loop for suspension; original ribbon with laurel wreath; measuring 30 mm in diameter. 4) Hellenic Red Cross Service Medal (1946-1949); in silvered bronze; circular central white enamel medallion with a red enamel cross, with royal crown and letters “E”, “E”, “S”, standing for “Hellenic Red Cross”; the reverse depicts “National Struggle” in Greek Characters; on horizontally-pierced ball suspension; original ribbon with star citation; measuring 39 mm x 34 mm. 5) Medal of the Quenn’s Fund for the Woollens of the Army (1938); in bronze; obverse with a crown cypher of Princess (Queen) Frederika within a horseshoe-shaped band of laurel inscribed “The Soldier’s Flannel: reverse plain; horizontally-pierced loop for suspension; original ribbon; measuring 37 mm x 37 mm. 6) Honourary Red Cross Service Medal, 1st Class; in silvered bronze; circular off-centre white enamel medallion with a red enamel cross; with half-circled blue enamel; the reverse plain; loop for suspension attached to medal on two points; original ribbon; measuring 30 mm in diameter. 4) Annual Blood Donation Conference Medal; obverse circular centre white enamel medallion with a red enamel cross; encircled by “Hellenic Red Cross” and “Through Humanity to Peace - 1877; reverse circumscribed with “Annual Blood Donation Conference”; medal bar and loop for suspension; original ribbon; measuring 25 mm in diameter.
