Hungary, Kingdom. A Rare Gendarmerie Officer’s Field Cap, Child’s Example
A rare and well-preserved Hungarian Gendarmerie cap, custom-manufactured for the child of an Officer. It is constructed of an olive-drab whipcord wool, and fully surrounded by a decorative side panel which is scalloped toward the front. Two magnetic metal buttons are fastened to the panel just below the peak. The peak itself features an insignia consisting of a cascading gold bullion wire medallion with a machine-embroidered red, white, and green Hungarian tricolour cockade. Stitched onto the left side of the panel is an insignia consisting of a dark green wool triangle overlaid by a layer of red wool, in turn overlaid by three gold bullion wire tresses. Emanating from the gap between the panel and crown directly above the insignia is a plume of black raven feathers. Completing the exterior features is a protruding visor, reinforced with a malleable core and fully lined in identical wool. The interior features a partially-intact dark brown leather sweatband set around the lower circumference, and is fully encompassed by an olive-drab satin liner. Unmarked, the cap measures approximately 155 mm (w) x 210 mm (l) x 125 mm (h). Deterioration consistent with age and soiling is evident to the sweatband, in addition to slight fatigue of the wire features. This rare cap is in an overall near extremely fine condition.
