A grand cross set consisting of a breast star and a a grand cross badge, the breast star of multi-piece construction, consisting of an eight-pointed silver star, with a cross attached to the obverse with white enameled arms, a war decoration consisting of green enameled laurel leaves attached to the six o’clock arm, with crossed swords, constructed of silver gilt, with a central red enameled medallion depicting silver gilt Patriarchal cross, surrounded by a green enameled laurel wreath; the reverse plain, with a vertical pinback, a barrel hinge, and a round wire catch; measuring 90.60 mm (w) x 91.01 mm (h); missing single sword handle, weighing 91.4 grams. The grand cross badge constructed of silver gilt, in the shape of a Latin cross with white enameled arms, with crossed swords, with a central red enameled medallion depicting silver gilt Patriarchal cross, surrounded by a green enameled laurel wreath; the reverse inscribed “Sideus Pronobis Quis Contranos” (Latin - For our side); measuring 56.62 mm (w) x 61.80 mm (h); suspended from its period original full size sash ribbon; the breast star missing the right grip of its sword, in otherwise extremely fine condition.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
