Grand Cross of fine quality Austrian manufacture, by Rothe, Wien, comprising: Cross in silver gilt and enamels, unmarked, 74.3mm x 103mm inclusive of crown suspension, slightly worn condition, no enamel chipping, extremely fine; Breast Star in silver, 86.0 mm x 88.0 mm, vertical pinback, pin marked C.F. Rothe, along with French import silver hallmark (a swan), in extremely fine condition. The set comes with a short original sash (as worn across the chest); circa 1900 manufacture. Footnote: The order was originally founded in 1514 as an award for military, civil and spiritual merits. It was inactive until revived by Grand Duke Ferdinand III of Tuscany in 1807. The order was issued in three classes and was generally confined to members of the Roman Catholic faith. After 1860 when Italy united the order become obsolete/unofficial, however, the Head of the Order (Head of House of Habsburg-Lorraine) continued to award the Order until about 1950.
