Instituted 1833. Second Italian War of Independence issued. Type I. Model II. Constructed of fine silver, the obverse featuring a period crowned Italian royal coat of arms, surrounded by the inscription AL VALORE MILITARE, reverse with an engraved central laurel wreath, within the inscription GUERRA CONTRO L’IMPERO D’AUSTRIA (War against Austrian Empire), measuring 33.51 mm diameter, marked by initial F.G. for G. Ferrari, presenting general toned silver, with slightly bent edges, suspended by period original chest ribbon with a slider plaque, a scarce piece in very good condition.
Footnote: Awarded the Second Italian War of Independence (also called the Franco-Austrian War, or Italian War of 1859), fought by the Second French Empire and the Kingdom of Sardinia against the Austrian Empire in 1859. This War was a key event in the process of Italian unification.
