Instituted by Charles Albert, King of Sardinia on March 26, 1793. Awarded for the Spanish Civil War, an official issue Silver Grade Al Valore Militare Medal, in silver, the obverse bears a crowned cross encircled by a wreath and the inscription Al VALORE MILITARE, the reverse is engraved CIELO DI SPAGNA NOV. 1937- APR. 1938 MARTIRE A LEARDO (Skies of Spain - Martyr to Leader), marked on the reverse with an 800 silver fineness stamp and Spanish national mark denoting maker 38, a fasces and MI (Milan), worn on the original blue ribbon with metal hook engraved with a shield inscribed BREVET, the medal measures 33.7mm (w) x 40.0mm (h - inclusive in integral bar), weighs 23.1 grams, dark patina, minor wear, in extremely fine condition.
Contained in its case of issue, a red leatherette exterior with silk interior lid marked CRAVANZOLA Succ E. Gardino, and fitted medal bed in base, measures 56mm (w)x 107.7mm (h) x 15.6mm (d), marked on exterior with tape inscribed MARTIRE Aleardo, hinge and clasp functional, remains in very fine condition.
