An 1859 Italian Al Valore Militare Medal - War of 1859 - obverse with Italian Royal Arms, with F.G. initials below (official issue), reverse officially engraved “GUERRE D’ITALIE 1859” around and “PAPOT A SERG. 30E LIGNE”; with period ribbon, in very fine condition, scarce. Footnote: Awarded to a Frenchman, for Gallantry during The Second Italian War of Independence (also called the Franco-Austrian War, or Italian War of 1859), fought by the Second French Empire and the Kingdom of Sardinia against the Austrian Empire in 1859; this War was a key event in the process of Italian unification.
