Instituted on September 28, 1829 by Francis I. In silver, a large Maltese cross with fleur de lis in each quadrant, the central medallion features the crowned cypher of Francis I, surrounded by a green enamel wreath and a blue enamel ring inscribed DE REGE OPTIME MERITO (The King Deserves The Best), the reverse with a single vertical pin assembly, measures 62.9mm (w) x 64mm (h), weighs 47.4 grams, very dark patina, loss of gilt to fleur de lis, hinge and catch functional, remains in very fine condition.
