Italy, Kingdom. A Royal Air Force Academy Aviation Cadets Caserta Training Centre Dagger
Dagger with a polished steel blade, magnetic, with dull edges and a semi-sharp tip, the ricasso number stamped "2662" on the reverse, the blade exhibiting marks and surface wear common to extraction from the scabbard, along with surface rust at the point, the blade measuring 220 mm in length. The crossguard and handle in bronze, both sides of the crossguard illustrating a figure eight knotted rope in the centre and flanked by wings on either side, the handle designed with a series of "X" patterns on its sides and at its base, with real embedded mother-of-pearl ribbed plates on either side, the dagger finished with a screwed-in pommel bearing a crowned eagle's head, the handle on the obverse with the embedded mother-of-pearl plate exhibiting light contact, with crazing and wear present on the mother-of-pearl plate on the reverse, the dagger measuring 327 mm in length overall. The accompanying scabbard in bronze, both bands designed with ornate circles, each of the bands incorporating rings, finished with a ribbed and snob-nosed finial, the obverse body of the scabbard illustrating an eagle between the two bands, the areas flanking the bands along with the remaining body bearing leafing throughout, the reverse of the body without design, the scabbard exhibiting a large dent on the body on the reverse near the finial and measuring 242 mm in length. Attached to the scabbard are dagger hangers, composed of a large belt tab along with two straps, each of which is in gray embroidery trimmed with strips in fine gold-coloured bullion wire on either side. The accompanying hardware is in bronze gilt, consisting of two length adjustment buckles with spring-loaded clips at the end of each strap and attached to the two rings on the scabbard, the opposite end with the two straps stitched in place to a loop that projects from the belt tab and incorporates a u-shaped hook, the two straps exhibiting creasing fold marks and undulation.
