Italy, PNF. A Fascist MSVN (Voluntary Militia for National Security) Centurion’s Fez

This is an extremely well-preserved Milizia Volontaria per la Sicurezza Nazionale (Voluntary Militia for National Security) Blackshirt’s fez, constructed of smooth black wool. The obverse peak is adorned with a machine-embroidered gold bullion wire insignia depicting a Partito Nazionale Fascista (National Fascist Party) fasces insignia flanked by multiple rows of oak leaves, with central number “15” underneath. The left side has a machine-embroidered, chevron-style insignia composed of three gold bullion wire bands separated by two rows of black embroidery, indicating a rank of Centurion (equivalent to a captain). Stitched into the top of the fez are two rows of braided woven black ropes knotted into a double loop on the left, ending in a tassel formation hanging over the side of the fez. The interior of the fez has a 53 mm-wide brown leather sweatband securely fitted with double rows of stitching. The sweatband is stamped “Real Russia Leather”, but the fez is otherwise unmarked. The fez measures approximately 174 mm in diameter and 105 mm in height. There is some minor soiling of the sweatband, but the fez is in an otherwise extremely fine condition.
