France, Vichy. A Vichy France Prefect's Visor Cap
This is an extremely-well preserved Vichy French Prefect's visor cap, constructed of smooth black wool. The entire circumference of the cap band is adorned by machine-embroidered gold bullion wire in an ornate oak leaf-style design. The front peak bears a machine-embroidered gold bullion wire insignia depicting a central fasces surrounded by oak leaves, measuring 44 mm (w) x 55 mm (h). The cap is flanked on each side by gilded brass buttons, bearing raised faces, holding in place a braided, decorative gold bullion wire chinstrap, neatly knotted at each end, which rests upon the cap’s black leather visor. The interior of the cap has a black leather sweatband, 40 mm wife, securely stitched into place. There is a full and intact black rayon interior liner with a silky texture. The cap is unmarked and measures 260 mm (w) x 264 mm (l) x 125 mm (h). There is some minor, age-appropriate fatigue to the leather features, but the cap is in an otherwise extremely fine condition.
