Орден Књаза Данила I. Instituted in 1853. 2nd Model (1861-1918). A French made IV class decoration in silver gilt, presenting a red, white and blue enamelled cross with crown suspension, the obverse medallion presents the crowned cypher of Prince Danilo I, surrounded by the inscription КНЯЗЪ ЦРНОГОРСКІИ, the reverse presents the institution date 1852.3 on red enamel, surrounded by a blue enamelled ring ЗА НЕЗАВИСИМОСТЪ ЦРНЕ ГОРЕ, measures 39.50mm (w) x 61.7mm (h – inclusive of cross adorned crown suspension), weighs 27.9 grams, marked on reverse suspension above 12 o’clock arm with French boar head denoting a Paris guarantee since 1838 for small items, heavy gilt wear, loss of enamel to obverse and reverse, specifically reverse central medallion, in better than fine condition.
Accompanied by a triangular ribbon of the order.
Footnote: The order for merit for the independence of Montenegro was established by Prince Danilo I on 23rd April (5th May) 1853, as a token of appreciation, bravery and merits to all who contributed to the defense and independence of Montenegro.
