A Rare Dutch Tollenaere Honour Badge
Netherlands: In silver, cast with a semi-hollow reverse, illustrating the Dutch wolf's hook, fronted by a rectangular box inscribed with the motto "TROUW" (Loyalty), the hook backed by a downward-pointing sword, a circular ring forming the bottom of the badge and inscribed with the Flemish motto "AANR. TOLLENAERE KOPZY JAN. 1942" (the date and place where Tollenaere was killed), with floral motifs incorporated in various locations throughout, 35.5 mm x 51.2 mm, both lugs intact, light contact and surface wear on the obverse, residue or what appears to be heat damage evident on the reverse, small hairline crack above "Trouw", otherwise fine.
Footnote: The Tollenaere Honour Badge was the second most prestigious award and was rendered in two classes silver and bronze, although their is no evidence shown that the silver class was ever worn. The badge honours the death of the VNV Black Brigade Leader Dr. Reimond Tollenaere, who was killed in action at Kopzy, near Leningrad, on January 22, 1942. The VNV Black Brigade members were awarded this badge for loyalty and sacrifice.
