Netherlands. A Dutch WHN Winter Relief Donation Can, c.1942
A second war period dutch WHN winter relief donation can; constructed of red painted metal (magnetic) with a large coffee-mug-like handle. The lid features a raised horizontal slot to allow coins to pass through, as well as a small hole to allow paper currency to be rolled up and put into the can. Visible behind the coin slit is a metal flap that covers the slit, thus allowing no coins to fall out if the can is turned upside-down. The side his stamped and hand painted with a white clover leaf that reads “WHN”. The exterior of the can features a flap that is folded over a two tabs with holes in them to allow a lock to be passed through, thus not allowing the can to be opened. The interior of the can features two slits through which the coins fall, with a chain mail-like assembly that prevents coins from falling out if it is turned upside-down. It is numbered “43845” on the bottom of the can, and measures 100 mm x 170 mm; with paint transfer from use and age; in overall very fine condition. (C:166)
