Netherlands. A Pair of Early Royal Dutch Navy Vice-Admiral Dress Epaulettes
Large, decorative stiff-framed epaulettes, the uppers in a very fine gold-coloured bullion wire, with a brass Dutch Navy button bearing a crowned anchor placed at the neck end, both epaulettes missing their dual rank star devices on the oval cap. There is a large raised gold-coloured bullion wire ridge flanked by rows of fine gold-coloured bullion wire on either side of the protruding wide oval cap, with two rows of tightly-wound bullion wire fringe (tassels) suspended from the cap, one row with a smaller fringe overlapped by a second row with a larger fringe. The underside is in black wool and is thickly padded, with an embroidered maker's label inscribed "W. VERVLOFT & ZOON / DEN HAAG" (The Hague) sewn in place, and finished with a large brass clip (passants), allowing the epaulettes to be fastened to the shoulders on the uniform. Each epaulette measures 120 mm (w) x 180 mm (h) x 100 mm (d) inclusive of its fringe, exhibiting light soiling, along with some wear and fraying in the fringe, the stitching remaining intact, very fine.
