Netherlands, Kingdom. A ‘s-Gravenhage (The Hague) First Model Municipal Police Pith Helmet, c.1930
A very well-preserved ‘s-Gravenhage (The Hague) Municipal Police pith helmet, constructed of a sholapith shell, with the exterior lined with dark purple canvas. The crown features a removable reinforced canvas topper covering the ventilation shaft. The helmet is flanked on each side by dual ventilation holes, and is wrapped with a blackened leather band. Pinned into the front of the helmet is a silvered bronze insignia consisting of the coat of arms of The Hague, topped by a royal crown and above a raised inscription of “POLITIE ‘S GRAVENHAGE” (“THE HAGUE POLICE”), measuring 52 mm (w) x 74 mm (h). A black leather strap lines the edge of the rim, while the interior is lined with green canvas. A 50-mm wide brown leather sweatband fully lines the interior circumference, bearing a size mark of “56”. Two visible rivets holding the exterior insignia in place are marked “MADE IN ENGLAND”. The helmet is otherwise unmarked and measures 220 mm (w) x 295 mm (l) x 198 mm (h). Sporadic tearing and gouging is visible to the exterior, with attempts at repair evident, along with age-appropriate material fatigue to the leather features. The helmet is in an overall better than very fine condition.
