Footnote: The Norwegian United Nations Battalion in Lebanon (NORBATT) was part of the United Nations Force in Lebanon (NORCO), a section of the UN's temporary force in Lebanon Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). Norbatt was created in 1978 and existed through forty-one contingents until 1998. About. 21,400 Norwegians served in NORBATT in one or more contingents and was located in the southeastern corner of Lebanon. On March 22, 1978, Norway responded positively to the UN's request to participate in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The UN peacekeeping forces were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts on December 10, 1988.
