Eight unissued awards in bronze gilt, obverse illustrating the Norway coat-of-arms within a scalloped border, surrounded by the inscription "9 APRIL 1940" and "8 MAI 1945", reverse illustrating the national and state flags and the royal standard, fronted by a ring inscribed "DELTAGER I KAMPEN" (Participant in Battle), all within a chain border, measuring 33.5 mm (w) x 49.5 mm (h) inclusive of its integral suspension, very light contact, five with rosette affixed to its original ribbon with pinback, maker marked "J. TOSTRUP" on the reverse of the pinback, near mint. In its paper envelope of issue, obverse inscribed in red ink "DELTAGER MEDALJEN" between the Royal crown above and a rosette below, reverse maker marked "TOSTRUP", measuring 62 mm (w) x 102 mm (h), pinholes, undulated, envelope very fine.
Footnote: The Participation Medal was instituted on September 19, 1945 and was awarded, subject to varying minimum qualifying periods of service, to Norwegian and Allied military and civilians who resisted the German invasion of April 9, 1940, who served in the Norwegian armed forces or the Merchant Marine during the war or who were active in Norway in the winter of 1944-1945 and to Allied personnel who took part in the liberation of Norway. It is sometimes referred to as the Narvik Medal, as it was awarded to those who took part in that most daring of operations.
