Poland, Republic. An Polish Independence Group Attributed to Josef Lesniedski
1. Independence Cross without Swords (Krzyz i Medal Niepodleglosci) (in bronze gilt with black enamels, obverse illustrating the Polish eagle in the centre, flanked by the inscriptions "BOJOWNIKOM" at the left and "NIEPODLEGLOSCI" at the right, reverse is blank, measuring 39.7 mm (w) x 43.8 mm (h) inclusive of its integral ring suspension, chipping evident in the black enamels on the arm at 9 o'clock, light contact overall, original ribbon);
2. Association of Polish Legionnaires Badge (in die-stamped bronze, the letters "JP" (Josef Pilsudski) in the centre framed within a wreath, the letters "L" and "P" "Legiony Polskie) on the upper and lower arms respectively, inscribed with the dates "1914" and "1918" on the left and right arms respectively, measuring 43.7 mm (w) x 42.8 mm (h), screwback, attached to a period ribbon). Accompanied by an award document for the Independence Cross (hardcovered, numbered "18862" and named to "Josef Lesniedski", with a black and white photo of the recipient on the inside cover, measuring 70 mm (w) x 95 mm (h)). Very fine.
Footnote: The Independence Cross was instituted on October 29, 1930. The version without swords was awarded to those individuals who made an exceptional contribution in armed conflict or directing military operations in Poland or outside its borders. 35,258 of these crosses were awarded.
