A Second Polish Republic Army Officer’s sabre, measuring 940 mm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 780 mm-long magnetic steel blade with a sharpened tip and with a fuller running the length of each side. Both the obverse and reverse feature acid-etched designers, with the obverse bearing a central cursive inscription of “HONOR I OJCZYZNA” (“HONOUR AND FATHERLAND”) set within arabesques, while the reverse bears a central Polish national eagle, similarly flanked by finely-detailed arabesques. It sits securely within a one-piece bronze hilt, with the seam covered by an intact boiled brown leather buffer pad, featuring a gently curved handguard. The handle grip is composed of a single piece of blackened, boiled, and ribbed leather, with the ribbing retaining an original twisted and rolled bronze cord. The sabre is accompanied by its period original scabbard, constructed of a polished magnetic metal shaft. The upper quarter of the shaft features two integral bands, each retaining a suspension loop for the accommodation of a sword hanger. The throat is held together by dual side rivets. Extensive issues consistent with age are evident, and include pitting of the blade’s lower edge, oxidation of the bronze features, deterioration of the handle grip, and some denting and oxidation to the scabbard. The scabbard’s throat catch has also been rendered non-functional. It is in an overall fair condition.
