(Ordem da Rainha Santa Isabel). Instituted 1801. Type II. Badge of the Order, Ladies Issue exclusively, of particularly fine quality and craftsmanship, consisting of an entirely hand carved medallion in Gold with etched rose and laurel upper surround, obverse centre applique depicting Queen Saint Isabel feeding the poor, both in fine enamels with hand painted details, with bottom scroll hand etched with Motto Pauperum Solatio (Comfort the Poor), reverse centre applique in painstaking detail depicting the cipher of Queen Isabel in hand etched Gold lettering, with dark blue enamelled scroll presenting the institution date 1801, light blue enamelled surround with Gold lettering presents Real Ordem De Santa Isabel, Order of Saint Isabel, order adorned by Gold swivel crown with enamelled jewels, with Dutch Gold Assay mark on reverse top cross for 585 Gold content (14k), measuring 31 mm (w) x 62 mm (h - inclusive of crown & horizontally pierced ball suspension with cross), with minor enamel loss to obverse white background, otherwise better than extremely fine.

 

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society. His knowledge and passion for history and awards is evident in this meticulously compiled collection that is now available in its entirety for the first time exclusively on eMedals.com.
