(Ordem do Merito Agricola e Industrial). Instituted 1893. 1893-1910 Issue. A quality silver star consisting of nine arms, each composed of clusters of five individual rays, obverse centre presenting a stylized red enameled nine pointed star with small red enamel stars in each quadrant, central medallion in Gold featuring the inscription MERITO INDUSTRIAL (Industrial Merit), superposed by a bust of Carlos I in silver gilt, adorned by the Portuguese crown with enameled jewels, reverse with a dual prong pin assembly, marked by maker’s mark of J. A. Da Costa, Lisboa on the reverse cartouche, measuring 76.52 mm (w) x 85.30 mm (h - inclusive of the crown), with minor enamel loss, near extremely fine.
Footnote: The Order of Business Merit was instituted by King Charles I in 1893. It was abolished in 1910 following the establishment of the First Portuguese Republic but was later revived in 1926. The Order was originally composed of two divisions, Agricultural Merit and Industrial Merit, but a third division, Commercial Merit, was added in 1991. It is currently conferred upon individuals, who as entrepreneurs or employees, have contributed to the economic development of the Portuguese Republic.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
