(Ordem Militar de Avis). Instituted 1146. Type III, 1918-Present Issue. A silver gilt eight-pointed faceted star, obverse centre presenting a enameled green florid cross in Gold upon a white enameled background, surrounded by a silver gilt laurel wreath, the reverse with principle pin assembly, maker’s mark of FREDERICO COSTA LISBOA on the reverse cartouche, hallmarked Portuguese hallmark of silver purity of .833, marked with Lisbon hallmarks in the pin, measuring 88.70 mm (w) x 88.16 mm (h), toned silver, near extremely fine.
Footnote: The Military Order of Aviz was established by King Afonso I as an ecclesiastic Order in the 12th century, but it was later secularised by Queen Mary I in 1789. It was disbanded in 1910 following the establishment of the First Portuguese Republic but was re-established in 1918. The Order was conferred upon military personnel following its secularisation and was extended to civilians in the 19th century.
