(Ordem do Império Colonial). Instituted 1932. 1932-1974 Issue. An eight armed silver star exhibiting hand filed facets, obverse centre featuring a red enameled Cross of Christ, the coat-of-arms of Portugal at centre, reverse with principle pin assembly, maker’s mark of Joao Anjos, Lisboa on reverse cartouche, hallmarked on pin with Portuguese hallmark denoting .833 silver purity between 1938-1984, with Lisbon city hallmarks on both pin and catch, measuring 87.09 mm (w) x 87.91 mm (h), toned silver, extremely fine.
Footnote: The Imperial Order was established in 1932 as the Order of the Colonial Empire, but its name was changed in 1951. It was conferred upon Portuguese citizens and foreigners, as well as upon national and foreign corporations, in recognition of military and civil service rendered to Portuguese colonies. It was permanently discontinued in 1974 following the Carnation Revolution.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
