Romania, Kingdom. An Order of Michael the Brave, II Class Commander, c,1944
Ordinul Mihai Viteazul. Instituted in 1916. Type IV with 1944 date. In silver gilt with blue enamels, maker marked "CFZ" (C.F. Zimmermann, Pforzheim) flanked by a "7" on the left and a "44" on the right on the tip of the sword at 11 o'clock on its reverse, measuring 60.7 mm (w) x 84 mm (h) inclusive of its crown suspension, intact enamels, on a full-length replacement ribbon, extremely fine.
Footnote: The Order of Michael the Brave is Romania's highest military decoration, instituted by King Ferdinand I during the early stages of the Romanian Campaign of the First World War, and was again awarded in the Second World War. The Order, which may be bestowed either on an individual or on a whole unit, was named in honour of Michael the Brave (Mihai Viteazul), a late 16th-century Prince of Wallachia, Transylvania, and Moldavia.
