Footnote: The medal was first instituted in April 1828 during the reign of Tsar Nicholas I. After the death of Tsar Alexander II, the medal was redesigned and issued around 1894, bearing the likeness of the new sovereign, Tsar Nicholas II. The medal was bestowed upon individuals for deeds involving the saving of lives in peril.
