A rare badge in toned silver, marked with the combined " *84" silver standard mark and the St. Petersburg city mark (used from 1882-1899), along with the maker mark "ЛВ" on the tips of the ribbons on the badge and on the support plate, measuring 44.5 mm (w) x 56.5 mm (h), mounted to a 96 mm (w) x 95 mm (h) twenty-eight rayed starburst base, marked "900" (silver) and hallmarked on the reverse of the starburst, maker marked "ЛК", with period screwback, likely subsituted, marked with the St. Petersburg city mark, dated "1873" and marked with the "84" silver, dark patina on the badge, six of the points on the starburst slightly bent, extremely fine.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
