Russia, Imperial. A 1783 Commemorative Medal for the Benefits of the Russian Word
Constructed of bronze, the obverse bearing a raised and rightward-facing bust of Empress Catherine II (“the Great”), circumscribed by name and title in Cyrillic, the reverse bearing the Empress’ monogram, situated atop a radiant background and within a circular laurel leaf wreath, circumscribed by a Cyrillic inscription indicating that the medal was struck to commemorate the benefits of the Russian word, joined together at the bottom by a date of 21 October 1783, the obverse engraver marked “ТИМОФЕИ ЇВАНОВЪ” (“TIMOFEI IVANOV”), measuring 82.95 mm in diameter, demonstrating minor tarnishing and edge nicks, in better than very fine condition.
