Russia, Imperial. An 1828 Campaign Medal for the Capture of Varna, by Gottfried Loos
Constructed of bronze, the obverse bearing a raised and rightward-facing profile of Tsar Nicholas I, circumscribed by name and title in Russian Cyrillic, the reverse bearing a central raised Cyrillic inscription indicating that the medal was issued to commemorate the capture of Varna by the Imperial Russian Army on 29 September 1828, set within a circular laurel leaf wreath, the obverse maker marked “Г. ЛООСЪ” indicating manufacture by the noted German medallist Gottfried Bernhard Loos, measuring 38 mm in diameter, in extremely fine condition.
