Russia, Imperial. A First World War Russian Bond Poster, by Vladimir Varzhansky
An extremely well-preserved First World War Russian bond poster, constructed of paper stock and affixed to a period original white canvas backer. It features a full-colour illustration of a train car towing an artillery piece, above a Cyrillic inscription of “ВОЕННЫЙ 5 ½% ЗАЕМЪ” (“5 ½% WAR LOANS”). Beneath this is an additional inscription in pre-revolutionary Cyrillic of “ЧѢМЪ БОЛЬШЕ ДЕНЕГ, ТѢМЪ БОЛЬШЕ ОРУЖІЯ И СНАРЯДОВ, ТѢМЪ БЛИЖЕ К ПОБѢДЬ” (“MORE MONEY, MORE WEAPONS AND MEN, CLOSER TO VICTORY”). A designer’s mark is incorporated into the shadow cast by the train car reading “ВЛАДИМИР ВАРЖАНСКІЙ” (“VLADIMIR VARZHANSKY”). The poster measures 765 mm (w) x 1105 mm (h) (inclusive of canvas backer. This exceptional wartime example displays no notable signs of wear, and is in an overall extremely fine condition.
