Serbia, Kingdom. A Cabinet Card Depicting Dragutin Dimitrijević Apis, Black Hand Activist and 1903 Coup Leader
A rare cabinet card portrait depicting Dragutin Dimitrijević “Apis”, in uniform and wearing the Order of Karađorđe's Star, above a handwritten inscription bearing Dimitrijević’s name and a date of “VIDOVDAN 1917” (a Serbian national holiday celebrated on 28 June according to the Gregorian calendar and 13 June according to the Julian calendar) which is possibly in his own handwriting (and thus obtained shortly before his execution on 24 June), above the studio mark of Milan Jovanovitch in Serbian Cyrillic, the reverse bearing additional Jovanovitch marks in both Latin and Serbian Cyrillic script, with an additional German-language inscription identifying Dimitrijević, measuring 108 mm (w) x 164 mm (h), the image demonstrates some wear and damage, with additional soiling of the reverse, a scarce and historically-important cabinet card in fair condition.
