A Spanish Province of Vizcaya Victory Medal 1936-1939
In Bronze, 36 mm, original ribbon suspended from a traditional Spanish horizontal hanger with pinback, very light contact, extremely fine. Footnote: The medal was instituted in 1939 following the Nationalist victory in the Civil War. During the Second Spanish Republic, the Basque Nationalist Party governed Vizcaya and after the Civil War broke out in 1936, it supported the Republican side. Following the infamous bombing of Durango and then Guernica by the German Luftwaffe, Nationalist forces took Bilbao, which had itself been bombed, on June 19, 1937.
