(Orden de Isabel la Católica). Instituted 1815 by King Ferdinand VII. Alfonso XII and Alfonso XIII’s period of issue. Of quality French manufacture, consisting of a Maltese cross in Gold with ball finials, featuring multiple Gold rays in each quadrant, obverse centre exhibiting a finely detailed central medallion also in Gold, encircled by a white enameled border inscribed A LA LEALTAD ACRISOLADA (For the Unadulterated Loyalty), the reverse depicting the cypher of Ferdinand VII on an elegant dark blue enameled background, surrounded by the inscription POR ISABEL LA CATOLICA (For Isabella the Catholic), surmounted by a nicely flat enameled green laurel wreath also in Gold, presenting double stamped French owl hallmark denoting imported gold items since 1893, measuring 43.12 mm (w) x 58.03 mm (h - inclusive of integral ring), 20.09 grams, minor crack on white enamels, accompanied by original silk breast ribbon, extremely fine.
Footnote: The Order of Isabella the Catholic was instituted in Spain as the Royal and American Order of Isabella the Catholic by royal decree of King Fernando VII/Ferdinand VII on March 24, 1815. The name was modified in 1889, when the Spanish Crown abandoned its intentions of ruling Latin America and overseas. The Order is currently active in Spain, and it is conferred to foreigners and Spanish citizens either women or men for meritorious civil acts, especially those that foster the relationships between Spain and other nations.
