(Orden del Mérito Civil). Instituted by King Alfonso XIII on June 25, 1926. A multiple ray four-armed cross with beaded arms in silver, obverse superposing by an enameled blue four-armed cross with wavy ends bearing the inscription AL MERITO CIVIL (To Civil Merit), with a central etched Order's insignia in toned silver, adorning by period Imperial crown in silver, as well as by surmounted silver enameled green laurel wreath, with plain reverse, measuring 48.36 mm (w) x 75.65 mm (h - inclusive of the wreath suspension and integral arc), slightly tarnished silver, suspended by original ribbon with pinback for women wearing, extremely fine.
Footnote: The Order of Civil Merit was established in Spain by King Alfonso XIII on June 25, 1926. It is conferred upon Spanish and foreign citizens who has displayed civil virtue and meritorious actions that enhanced Spanish interests. The Order was abolished in 1933 by the Second Spanish Republic, and reinstated in 1942 by Francisco Franco. All grades are awarded to women, but in slightly smaller size.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
