Spain, Franco’s Period. An Order of Military Merit, White Distinction, III Class Breast Star c.1950
(Orden al Mérito Militar). Instituted 1864. 1939-1975 issued. In silver gilt an eight-pointed rayed star, with obverse centre exhibiting an enameled white Greek cross in silver gilt, with typical of time period enameled Spanish coat of arms also in silver gilt, featuring alternating lions and castles in each quadrant in silver, reverse with decorative pin assembly and two stays, measuring 70.80 mm (w) x 70.36 mm (h), with minor toned silver gilt, extremely fine.
Footnote: The Order of Military Merit was established in Spain by the Queen Isabel II on August 3, 1864. It was founded to reward the Spanish Armed Forces, including the Civil Guard, in recognition of gallantry and military merits in times of war and peace. The White Distinction is awarded to military personnel in recognition of meritorious service during peacetime.
