(Real y Militar Orden de San Fernando). Instituted 1811. Type II, 1815-1920 issued. Of French manufacture in silver gilt, a faceted Maltese Cross with ball finials, superimposing on an enameled green laurel wreath, obverse centre depicting a superposed handmade figure of St. Ferdinand on a rare white enameled field, surrounded by an enameled blue border inscribed by AL MERITO MILITAR (To Military Merit), reverse with pin assembly and dual stays, measuring 78.68 mm (w) x 79.20 mm (h), presenting oxidation on the star, very fine.

Footnote: The Royal and Military Order of Saint Ferdinand was originally founded in Spain as National Order of St. Ferdinand by the General Courts of Cadiz on August 31, 1811. It was approved by King Fernando VII/Ferdinand VII on November 28, 1814; and it was renamed Royal and Military Order of St. Ferdinand in 1815. Throughout 19th century, the Order was awarded in recognition of distinguished services and eminent acts of heroism in the defense of Spain and its citizens. The Order is currently awarded.

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society. His knowledge and passion for history and awards is evident in this meticulously compiled collection that is now available in its entirety for the first time exclusively on eMedals.com.
