A Maltese cross with ball finials in silver gilt, featuring beaded silver rays in each quadrant, obverse centre in Gold exhibiting a beautiful enameled dark-blue medallion, superposed by a figure of St. Hermengildo surrounded by an enameled green laurel wreath both in Gold, reverse with pin assembly and dual stays, with maker’s mark on reverse cartouche of E. Castells e Hijos, Barcelona, Purveyor to the Royal Court by the beginning of twentieth century, measuring 77.64 mm (w) x 76.50 mm (h), with smooth detach centrepiece, mint.
Footnote: The Royal and Military Order of St. Hermenegildo was founded in Spain by King Ferdinand VII after the end of the Peninsular War, on November 28, 1814. It was established in recognition of either Spanish or foreign military personnel who finally defeated the French army of Napoleon, and reconstituted the reign of Ferdinand VII. It is awarded in recognition of length of service with an unbroken record of exemplary behavior in the performance of their duties.
