(Real Orden de España/ Ordre royal d'Espagne). Instituted 1808 by Joseph Bonaparte. 1808-1844 Issue. Of French manufacture, a later issue in silver gilt, consisting of a red enamel five pointed star with ball finials, obverse centre depicting a Tower of Castile surrounded by an enameled blue border with Latin inscription JOS. NAP. HISP. ET IND. REX INST. (Joseph Napoleon, King of Spain and Indias, He found it -the Order-), reverse centre exhibiting a Lion of Aragon encircled by Latin inscription VIRTUTE AT FIDE (Virtue and Fidelity) on a blue enameled border, hallmarked with boars head denoting French silver manufacture in 800 fineness post 1838, with indecipherable makers mark on ring, measuring 41.64 mm (w) x 45.15 mm (h - inclusive of integral ball), presenting loss of gilt, accompanied by original red breast ribbon with bow, fine.
Footnote: The Royal Order of Spain was instituted in Spain by Joseph Bonaparte, then King of Spain, to reward both Spaniard and French civilian or military personnel who had served the French cause in Spain. It was abolished in Spain by Ferdinand VII in 1815, and prohibited in France by Luis XVIII in 1819; however, Bonaparte continued to bestow the awards until his death in 1844.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
