(Orden al Mérito Militar). Instituted 1864. Alfonso XII-Alfonso XIII (1874-1926). Type I, White Distinction. An exquisite eight-pointed star consisting of delicate cut silver rays, with obverse centre depicting a very classic white-enamelled cross of four equal arms in Gold, with superposed white, blue and red-enamelled Spanish coat of arm also in Gold, adorned by typical of Spanish Crown and clasp both in Gold, with fine silver fleur-de-lis in each quadrant, reverse with pin assembly and dual stays, with prominent German maker’s mark “Godet in Berlin”, measuring 90.30 mm (w) x 89.6 mm (h), with slightly loose 7 o’clock fleur-de-lis, and toned silver, extremely fine.
Footnote: The Order of Military Merit was created by Queen Isabel II by a royal decree of 3rd August, 1864. It was founded to reward individual acts of distinction and bravery or acts of significant service and merit by members of the Armed forces and Civil Guard. The White Division is awarded in recognition of meritorious service during missions, or services led by the Armed Forces, and connected to the defense of the nation.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
